Weaving Retreat 2023
University Project - Yorkshire UK
For the first project of our Final Year we were encouraged to think about memories. To design a space in the existing ruins of Roche Abbey's Gatehouse. with the idea of preserving a dissapearing craft within it (out of the three options I choose Weaving). As a response I have decided to firstly focus on the concept of Wabi-sabi in order to embrace the history of the site and the craft. I have then thouroughly stuided the craft, it's tools and people in order to come up with an initial design language and emotions inspired by the latter. In addition to this I have also looked at the hollistic relationship between master and disciple. Merging the perservation of the craft with the transmission of knowdledge as forseen in an Abbey. Thus desgning a space that feels hollistic and encourgaes respect in order to connect the space to the sites roots. Last of all I have also added additional activities and crafts to the brief as a retreat and thus the seeking of creativity doesn¨s come from only one passion but from merging several ones (miniature boats, kayaking, music and the surrounding nature.) i have also added space for them, creating a more complex and grounding experience for the owner.

For the first time I have really thought about what i needed in a space instead of a ficitional client as I wanted to explore my style completly in order to understand how i can manipulate and transcribe it in my future and reinforce my perspective and own identity regarding design. Adding my own memories within the project adding yet another layer of complexity.
